Choose a mat for the entrance it will serve

A mat at the doorway gives people a place to wipe their shoes before moving further indoors. Begin with the entrance itself: is it inside, sheltered from rain or fully exposed? Indoor and outdoor suitability should be confirmed for the individual product.

Measure the doorway and the floor area where the mat will lie. Check the gap beneath the door along its full swing so the mat does not bunch up or prevent opening. Leave a clear route through the entrance.

Compare construction, backing and cleaning needs

Think about the type of dirt the entrance receives and how frequently it is used. Look at the surface texture, thickness and manufacturer guidance when comparing mats. Do not assume that every mat can be left in rain or machine washed.
